In June 2023, researchers fitted a young bull elephant, known as Z16, with a GPS collar in Zambia's Sioma Ngwezi National Park. Over the next two years, Z16 embarked on an extraordinary journey, covering nearly 12,000 kilometers.
His travels took him across four countries and through six national parks, showcasing the ancient migration routes that elephants have historically followed. This research sheds light on the challenges faced by wildlife in the face of human encroachment.
The data collected from Z16's movements not only enhances our understanding of elephant behavior but also emphasizes the need for conservation efforts to protect these vital migration corridors.
